Movie review - Avant-première
Hopscotch (Rayuela)
Release date: 08/26/2014
Country: Argentina/France
Scheduled to be released in a week, Hopscotch had its avant-première today and I am proud to say I was one of the few lucky ones to be sitting in the cinema set up inside Luna Park, in Buenos Aires, to watch it before anyone else. And I did like what I see.
Anyone who have read the book by Julio Cortázar can imagine how complicated it would be to translate it to the silver screen, due to its unorthodox internal organisation. But the director did a near flawless job. The shootings only started after a two-year research, with Jaime Alazraki and Saúl Sosnowski as the main consultants for the movie. Some advice also came from Univesity of Texas at Austin, where is the biggest collection of the Argentininan Belgian-born author.
A co-production of Argentina and France, the movie has scenes shot in Buenos Aires and in Paris. The stars of the cast are the former radio actor Tito Balcárcel and the gorgeous Glenda Garson. She is perfect playing the role of the not-so-smart Lucía “La Maga”and he is astonishing as the too-smart-but-very-confused Horacio Oliveira.
The soundtrack marries perfectly the élan of the movie. While Horacio is in France, soft songs are played low in the background; when he gets beck to Argentina, we listen to a lot of tangos: Gardel, Contursi and many others. The rest of the sound track is composed by the jazz songs the members of the The Serpent Club listen to (Jelly Roll Morton, Duke Ellington) and one very soft and, well, erotic song by Norah Jones which played during the scene which corresponds to Chapter 7 in the book.
This is a must see! Do not miss it! And, after the DVD is released, buy it! In the DVD, accordingly to the movie director, in his interview after the avant-première session, it will be possible to choose which way you want to watch the story: in the direct sequence (without the “prescindible chapters”) or hopscotching through the entire set.
What are you waiting for? Pre-order it now!
