Essay suggesting solutions to a problem - A bold proposal
To J.S., for his superb irony
Youth is often considered to be a foolish, idealistic period of our lives, and in the present essay I shall prove once more that this is perfectly correct. By demonstrating the typical thoughts of naïve maidens and lads (in this specific case, thoughts of that ridiculously optimistic creature I once was) I shall demonstrate how far from reality they are.
The following were ideas I had considered to publish in another (rather different) essay, concerning human interaction in our contemporary days. I kindly ask for my reader' complaisance, for I was innocent in those not so distant days. Ah, youth... equal portions of beauty and nonsense!
It all started after I had saw many persons in the trains or in the buses using earphones. That concerned me a little, because of the regular basis on which it occured. The same individuals would, day after day, week after week, listen to their songs but not to the person sitting next to them. If I would try to start a conversation with a person in such a situation, I would soon find myself frustrated by the lack of the interest of her or him. That used to remind me of Ray Bradbury’s character Mildred Montag, because of the earphones.
After frustrated attempts to stablish contact with “earphoners”, I tried a simpler techniche – smiling. In those times – and now I can not avoid laughing at the simple idea of it – I used to think people would be sympathetic to such sincere expression. Needless to say, they were not. Those wearing sunglasses would just pretend nothing had happened; the others would look at me as if I were a maniac or, what I consider even worst, would just turn their faces. How fool was I, and I ask you to forgive me, for I am not that ingenuous anymore.
Later I had worst and worst ideas: helping the poor, taking care of the children, avoiding unnecessary use of natural resources... Pieces of stupidity that could only be conceived be someone who has no idea of how the world goes round.
To conclude, I must ask you: look at those ideas I once intended to publish in an essay as if they could change the world. Do not be as naïve as I was: take the world for what it is and avoid hurting your feelings. The real problem we need to eliminate is idealistic individuals... and those who can not undestand an irony.
